Endogenous Technical Change and Skill Biases in Employment Opportunities by

چکیده
In this paper we present a model that addresses the issue of the uneven distribution of employment opportunities over lowand high-skilled workers in a context of skill-biased endogenous technical change. In our model, technical change consists in part of product innovation. There is also process innovation to the extent that new products can be produced in two different ways, either using high-skilled workers, or using low-skilled workers after adapting the production process of a new product. The model combines elements from Krugman’s (1979) North-South framework, Vernon’s (1966) life-cycle hypothesis and Aghion and Howitt’s (1992) work on creative destruction. We show that from a growth point of view, lowering the relative wages for low-skilled workers does indeed reduce unemployment in the short run, as expected, but it also lowers growth. This is reminiscent of Kleinknecht’s (1998) contention that moderate wage growth makes for slow technical change.

In this study we develop and calibrate a search and matching model of the German labour market and analyze the impact of recent immigration. Our model has two production sectors (manufacturing and services), two skill groups and two ethnic groups of workers (natives and immigrants). Moreover, we allow for the possibility of self-employment, endogenous price and wage setting and fiscal redistrib...

A central organizing framework of the voluminous recent literature studying changes in the returns to skills and the evolution of earnings inequality iswhatwe refer to as the canonicalmodel, which elegantly and powerfully operationalizes the supply and demand for skills by assuming two distinct skill groups that perform twodifferent and imperfectly substitutable tasks or produce two imperfectly...

This paper aims to survey the theoretical and empirical literature on increasing wage and employment differentials in favour of high skill workers and against low skill workers. Much literature stresses the role of demand shifts against low skill workers, caused by skill biased technical change (SBTC) and by sector biased international trade (SBIT). Moreover, demand shifts with characteristics ...
